Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Waldron's brief biography of Thomas Merton examines and exposes a man who lived a deeply spiritual life, yes, but also a deeply conflicted one as well. By the use of Jungian theory and archetypes, Waldron explores all of the major Merton works (e.g., Seven Storey Mountain, The Sign of Jonas, The Collected Poems, Zen and the Birds of Appetite), but especially all of the many volumes of Merton's private diaries, and discovers a man, a soul struggling to live "la vita nuova" in the monastery while being drawn by various sirens out of it. Edgy, chancy, and at times speculative, Waldron penetrates Merton's sometimes dense poetry and prose to discover or uncover what was wanting in Merton's soul his desire for his own hermitage; his longing for the nurse he fell in love with; his desire perhaps to establish an entirely new monastic foundation. Merton emerges less a saint than a sinner who never stopped trying to become a saint by "becoming who he really was."

Book excerpt: This edited collection explores the image of the wound as a ‘cultural symptom’ and a literary-visual trope at the core of representations of a new concept of selfhood in Early Modern Italian and English cultures, as expressed in the two complementary poles of poetry and theatre. The semantic field of the wounded body concerns both the image of the wound as a traumatic event, which leaves a mark on someone’s body and soul (and prompts one to investigate its causes and potential solutions), and the motif of the scar, which draws attention to the fact that time has passed and urges those who look at it to engage in an introspective and analytical process. By studying and describing the transmission of this metaphoric paradigm through the literary tradition, the contributors show how the image of the bodily wound—from Petrarch’s representation of the Self to the overt crisis that affects the heroes and the poetic worlds created by Ariosto and Tasso, Spenser and Shakespeare—could respond to the emergence of Modernity as a new cultural feature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly two-thirds of the Civil War's approximately 750,000 fatalities were caused by disease--a staggering fact for which the American medical profession was profoundly unprepared. In the years before the war, training for physicians in the United States was mostly unregulated, and medical schools' access to cadavers for teaching purposes was highly restricted. Shauna Devine argues that in spite of these limitations, Union army physicians rose to the challenges of the war, undertaking methods of study and experimentation that would have a lasting influence on the scientific practice of medicine. Though the war's human toll was tragic, conducting postmortems on the dead and caring for the wounded gave physicians ample opportunity to study and develop new methods of treatment and analysis, from dissection and microscopy to new research into infectious disease processes. Examining the work of doctors who served in the Union Medical Department, Devine sheds new light on how their innovations in the midst of crisis transformed northern medical education and gave rise to the healing power of modern health science.

Book excerpt: In this unique book, readers are taken on a journey to explore the role of the imagination in the face of mystery, whether it be the mystery of God, whose full reality lies beyond our earthly horizons, or the deepest mysteries of life hinted at in the work of fiction. By attending to a series of novels, Paul Lakeland proposes serious fiction as an antidote to the failure of the religious imagination today and shows how literature might lead the secular mind at least to the threshold of mystery.

Book excerpt: This is a rare multicultural perspective on disease, particularly cancer, in which the author takes on a journey through the medical establishments, cultural taboos, gender-tagged attitudes and personal stories of different civilisations. It could also be defined as a quest on how human logic relates to illness. The writing itself blends the diary, personal letters, poems and songs with excerpts from some of the foremost authorities in cancer research, producing an effect upon the reader akin to that which she experienced herself, as she moved back and forth between the emotional and physical shock of the cancer experience and the objective scientific data she uncovered. She begins to find cancer everywhere in her physical environment: friends, relatives and people she has never met -- some die. She finds a depth of friendship and support that she had never expected including that of her close companion. While writing her book she sent sections of it to friends, who commented on the text. These honest responses to her story add a further dimension. The structure and content of the book are informed by her deep commitment to women, men, ecology and peace issues. As part of the journey she reads many books on the environment and cancer. Although she lives in the USA and France, the book takes the reader on physical journeys to many other cities including Paris, Tunis and Beirut.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Jesus Christ began His earthly ministry, He first went out and got baptized and was then led of the Holy Spirit into the wilderness, and there was tempted by the Devil. Then, in the power of the Spirit, He began teaching in the synagogues. When He came to His hometown of Nazareth and went to church on the Sabbath and stood up to read, the elders delivered the book of Isaiah to Him, and He opened the book to the place where He read these words: "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, To preach the acceptable year of the Lord." Luke 4:18-19 (KJV) Jesus chose this passage of Scripture because it was known to be a prophecy of the coming Messiah, and it is a concise outline of the purpose and ministry calling of our Lord. The Holy Spirit living in the hearts of every born-again Christian is working to fulfill this Scripture for us all. Jesus Christ by the Spirit is also drawing all people to Him for their salvation through the measure of faith which our loving Father God has given to every person. It is will of God that no human being perish but that everyone would come to repentance. It is therefore His will that we all hear and respond to the gospel, that our broken hearts be healed, that the chains of our captive bondage be broken, that our physical and spiritual eyes be opened, and that every bruise and wound we carry be healed. That is the theme, calling, and purpose by which this daily devotional has been inspired to be written. The Word of God is clear in that our heavenly Father wants all people to accept His salvation, but just as true, He wants all to be healed and delivered. It is my prayer that this devotional will be used of the Lord to help accomplish this work in your lives.
