Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crusading in the twelfth century was less a series of discrete events than a manifestation of an endemic phenomenon that touched almost every aspect of life at that time. The defense of Christendom and the recovery of the Holy Land were widely-shared objectives. Thousands of men, and not a few women, participated in the crusades, including not only those who took the cross but many others who shared the costs and losses, as well as the triumphs of the crusaders. This volume contains not a narrative account of the crusades in the twelfth century, but a group of studies illustrating many aspects of crusading that are often passed over in narrative histories, including the courses and historiography of the crusades, their background, ideology, and finances, and how they were seen in Europe. Included are revised and updated versions of Giles Constable's classic essays on medieval crusading, along with two major new studies on the cross of the crusaders and the Fourth Crusade, and two excursuses on the terminology of crusading and the numbering of the crusades. They provide an opportunity to meet some individual crusaders, such as Odo Arpinus, whose remarkable career carried him from France to the east and back again, and whose legendary exploits in the Holy Land were recorded in the Old French crusade cycle. Other studies take the reader to the boundaries of Christendom in Spain and Portugal and in eastern Germany, where the campaigns against the Wends formed part of the wider crusading movement. Together they show the range and depth of crusading at that time and its influence on the broader history of the period.

Book excerpt: Such a blasphemous bastardisation of a word, 'Commonwealth'. 'Common' meaning of, or to, everyone regardless of place or estate and 'wealth' meaning relating to weal - wholeness, prosperity, health and success. the Puritans calling the theological tyranny of all aspects of England after the regicide the 'Commonwealth' is almost the closest to the ultimate debasement of English common parlance I can imagine. But not quite. I consider marginally worse their use of 'Protectorate'. You don't 'protect' rabbits by putting the most vicious and nasty weasel you can possibly breed down the warren-holes. It was bad enough the war between 'forty-two and 'forty-six lacerated England corporate in all aspects to a perilous degree. Even the most hideous wounds, if clean, can scab and scar over and the body become hale, if scarred, again. Sometimes surprisingly quickly. Take my word of honour as an ex-Officer for it. During my time soldiering I saw scores of such miraculous cases. But although that war wounded England grievous, it was the toxin of Puritanism so thoroughly rubbed into the gaping injuries during the wounding that turned England corporally and spiritually septic for over a decade thereafter. I pen these words with relief that the 'Commonwealth' and 'Protectorate' are now dead. Puritans are now selling up their property and leaving the country as despised and ostracised scum by the boat-load, with the generality spitting at their backs as they leave. the Americas are welcome to those that are commissioning the voyage boats and I'm glad the Shipwrights are profiting from their emergency fabrication. I hope the foundling Colonies have some use for the manure, for the meadows of England don't.

Serving more than one master is not only damned near impossible without magic, it's also deadly. Breaking his word is not an option. Sarn must keep both promises or die trying because those promises won't let him break them, not even to save the son he adores. Book excerpt: Paul Auster takes the reader on a vivid journey through the brief 29 years of Stephen Crane's life. Auster analyses the major works with such enthusiasm that the reader immediately wants to read Crane's work. Auster also brings to life the world of fin de siecle America as the 19th century ends and the 20th is beginning. This pulsating world is the background to a life lived at a fever pitch - in war zones, near-drowning on his way to the Spanish American War, as well involvement in a scandalous love affair that caused him to leave the country. Crane died in 1900, but he is not the last of the Victorians, he is the first of the Moderns.
