This book was released on 2020-01-03 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the beginning of software time, people have wondered why it isn’t possible to accelerate software projects by simply adding staff. This is sometimes known as the “nine women can’t make a baby in one month” problem. The most famous treatise declaring this to be impossible is Fred Brooks’ 1975 book The Mythical Man-Month, in which he declares that “adding more programmers to a late software project makes it later,” and indeed this has proven largely true over the decades. Aided by a domain-driven code generator that quickly creates database and API code, Parallel Agile (PA) achieves significant schedule compression using parallelism: as many developers as necessary can independently and concurrently develop the scenarios from initial prototype through production code. Projects can scale by elastic staffing, rather than by stretching schedules for larger development efforts. Schedule compression with a large team of developers working in parallel is analogous to hardware acceleration of compute problems using parallel CPUs. PA has some similarities with and differences from other Agile approaches. Like most Agile methods, PA "gets to code early" and uses feedback from executable software to drive requirements and design. PA uses technical prototyping as a risk-mitigation strategy, to help sanity-check requirements for feasibility, and to evaluate different technical architectures and technologies. Unlike many Agile methods, PA does not support "design by refactoring," and it doesn't drive designs from unit tests. Instead, PA uses a minimalist UML-based design approach (Agile/ICONIX) that starts out with a domain model to facilitate communication across the development team, and partitions the system along use case boundaries, which enables parallel development. Parallel Agile is fully compatible with the Incremental Commitment Spiral Model (ICSM), which involves concurrent effort of a systems engineering team, a development team, and a test team working alongside the developers. The authors have been researching and refining the PA process for several years on multiple test projects that have involved over 200 developers. The book’s example project details the design of one of these test projects, a crowdsourced traffic safety system.

Book excerpt: On a scorching June day in Buckeye, Arizona, thirteen-year-old Juan Miguel Quilantan discovers a body impaled on a saguaro. The authorities quickly link the crime to radical Islamists who are planning an attack on the four million citizens of the Phoenix area, using some undetermined weapon of mass destruction. Three people stand between the terrorists and a vulnerable metropolis: C. Ronald Cannon, a professor whose wife and children were murdered by ISIS; Laura Fatopoulos, a Muslim and FBI special agent who has dedicated her career to eradicating extremist factions; and boy-genius Juan Miguel, an illegal immigrant whose understanding of the electric grid exceeds that of most law enforcement professionals. Together, they travel to Austria and back—in only thirteen hours—to stop the terrorists from plunging the Valley of the Sun into chaos and anarchy. Learn what the terrorists already know and your role to help alleviate this real-life threat by reading The Red Saguaro: A Novel of National Import.

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER Acclaimed sports journalist Jack McCallum delivers the untold story of the greatest team ever assembled: the 1992 U.S. Olympic Men’s Basketball Team. As a writer for Sports Illustrated, McCallum enjoyed a courtside seat for the most exciting basketball spectacle on earth, covering the Dream Team from its inception to the gold medal ceremony in Barcelona. Drawing on fresh interviews with the players, McCallum provides the definitive account of the Dream Team phenomenon. He offers a behind-the-scenes look at the controversial selection process. He takes us inside the team’s Olympic suites for late-night card games and bull sessions where superstars like Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, and Larry Bird debated the finer points of basketball. And he narrates a riveting account of the legendary intrasquad scrimmage that pitted the Dream Teamers against one another in what may have been the greatest pickup game in history. In the twenty years since the Dream Team first captivated the world, its mystique has only grown. Dream Team vividly re-creates the moment when a once-in-a-millennium group of athletes came together and changed the future of sports—one perfectly executed fast break at a time. With a new Afterword by the author. “The absolute definitive work on the subject, a perfectly wonderful once-you-pick-it-up-you-won’t-be-able-to-put-it-down book.”—The Boston Globe “An Olympic hoops dream.”—Newsday “What makes this volume a must-read for nostalgic hoopsters are the robust portraits of the outsize personalities of the participants, all of whom were remarkably open with McCallum, both then and now.”—Booklist (starred review)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A case-centred study of Phantom Hitch-Hikers & Phantom Jaywalkers in Folklore and Fact. Tales of Phantom Hitch-Hikers are found the world over. But is there anything more to them than the staple of contemporary folklore they appear to be? Cases like Blue Bell Hill suggest there is. Here, and in numerous other modern cases, witnesses report vivid and terrifying encounters with solid-looking figures that step into the paths of their vehicles. These events show an affinity with the legendary Phantom Hitch-Hiker, suggesting that far from being mere vestiges of a superstitious folk tradition, they may reflect a genuine but complex phenomenon that continues to manifest in modern times and settings, and challenges our very notions of reality. This book traces Blue Bell Hill's ghost from its roots in folklore to compelling fact, with nearly 50 witness accounts attesting to it as an important modern example of haunting on record, and arguably the foremost case of its kind in the world today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many critics and fans refer to the 1990s as the decade that horror forgot, with few notable entries in the genre. Yet horror went mainstream in the ’90s by speaking to the anxieties of American youth during one of the country’s most prosperous eras. No longer were films made on low budgets and dependent on devotees for success. Horror found its way onto magazine covers, fashion ads and CD soundtrack covers. “Girl power” feminism and a growing distaste for consumerism defined an audience that both embraced and rejected the commercial appeal of these films. This in-depth study examines the youth subculture and politics of the era, focusing on such films as Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992), Scream (1996), I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997), Idle Hands (1999) and Cherry Falls (2000).

Book excerpt: Line Drive Lonnie and the Louisville Lightning Bolts By: Tyler Dahlgren A passion for sports and a love for storytelling merged early on for author Tyler Dahlgren, who began writing at the age of twelve. After graduating from the University of Nebraska-Omaha, Dahlgren spent nearly three years working as sports editor for the newspaper in his hometown of Blair, Nebraska, where he met his future wife, Alyssa. Dahlgren continues to tell stories, travelling Nebraska and highlighting the great things happening in the state's public schools for Nebraska Public School Advantage. His family resides in Omaha. The Dahlgrens welcomed their first child into the world on May Day, a son, Micah, and already have a space reserved on his bookshelf for Lonnie and the Lightning Bolts.. Three summers in college coaching youth baseball and digesting colorful dugout dialogue inspired Dahlgren's first novel, Line Drive Lonnie and the Louisville Lightning Bolts, which, at its core, is a story of baseball, family, food and, most importantly, the power of friendship.
