Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the book of 2 Peter, the apostle writes under inspiration that another apostle, Paul, wrote "Things, in which are some things hard to be understood" (2 Peter 3:16). Imagine, one inspired apostle, speaking about another inspired apostle's writings. But such, as any Christian will testify, is the absolute truth about Scriptures-they can be hard to comprehend! In my years interacting biblically, there are three comments I would inevitably get about three Scripture portions that reflect the statement by Peter, two sections in Paul's letter to Romans (Romans 7 and 11) and one from the Apostle John-Revelation. With John's Revelation, difficulties are universal and always the same subjects of books and conversations: "How should we read and interpret the book of Revelation with all the symbols, visions, etc.?" Anyone today will be familiar with the Left Behind series and the work that spawned many such books-The Late Great Planet Earth of the early '70s. Ideas on this book are legion.I have expounded on the first eleven chapters of Revelation-verse by verse-to attempt to show that the intended edification John had in mind when writing this work (see Revelation 1:1-3 etc.) actually was understood and edifying to the saints of the first century (and also to us). I wrote to show that if we are careful to lean on the Old Testament and its style of writing (in particular the book of Daniel), the book of Revelation turns out to be quite a straightforward work especially if we let Scripture interpret Scripture (example: Revelation 6:16 compare Luke 23:27-30). Indeed I think the truths of Revelation chapters 1 through 11 are so self-explanatory that the chapters that follow (if we keep comparing Old Testament and New Testament Scriptures) will fall quite naturally into place. Details may be tough, but general themes come out much clearer. In my life, preaching and exhortation a section of the Bible somewhat akin to the subject of Revelation would arise day in and day out: what is the meaning of Romans 11:26a, "And all Israel shall be saved," and how does it speak to the future of Israel? This verse was the central text for our greatest expository thinkers, the Puritans, and from the 1600s through the 1800s and into our twentieth century. This chapter was the basis for what was known as Puritan PostMillennialism (as opposed to the PreMillennialism of men like Tim Lahaye and Hal Lindsay). In this book, the section on Romans 11 (like Revelation and Romans 7) is handled verse by verse and is expounded systematically and slowly so that the mysteries that have often hung over Christians here might be seen in a newer, clearer light. In my travels, I've found many books, and too many conversations, approach these passages without regard to surrounding ideas. There is a desire for answers to Bible verses that, as Peter said, were hard to be understood and, without some patience, we will twist to our own harm and misunderstanding.Views are abundant when the subject is Romans 7. The inevitable comment or question-asked in multiple ways is: who is that guy in Romans 7 that cannot do what he wishes to do? It was Romans 7:13-25 that this type question arose, and I discovered over a period of a year the various views of this passage as well as the beauty, power, and answer to the question of: who is that guy in Romans s7? Indeed the study and writing of just Revelation chapters 1-11; Romans 7:13-25; and Romans 11:11-32-verse by verse-bore the fruit I believe we all desire when the going gets tough. This book is the fruit of a slow and steady exposition of these three aspects of the Scriptures: Romans 7:13-25; Romans 11:11-32; and Revelation chapters 1-11. As in any work in the Word of God, the wonders and glories you gain are incalculable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholars and students alike have hailed the book of Romans as one of the greatest single literary works of all time. When you consider that it is also the Word of God, it makes the study of his remarkable book all the more valuable for help in day-to-day living. Relying on the truth that Scripture is the best commentary on Scripture, author Fred Scheeren walks us through Romans by tracing the concepts and promises found in this awe-inspiring book through the New and Old Testaments. If you've ever wondered about: how to access the grace of God; how to walk victoriously in the Spirit; what it means to be "grafted" in as a believer; what it means to be heart-circumcised; the role and meaning of baptism in a believer's life; or how to avoid error when studying the Scriptures ......then you won't want to miss this Bible study guide. Better yet, find a group of like-minded friends to join you in creating a small study-group experience. Such a collection of people might also quite appropriately be called a "life group," as the members do more than enhance their knowledge of Scripture. They develop close, personal relationships as they apply God's Word to their lives and support each other in the positive growth they experience as a result.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the Bible: Head and Heart provides readers a forum for more fully comprehending the Bible. Each book of the Bible tells a story that relates to the larger story, and to understand each book’s story, it is important to understand the larger story, and vice versa. To do so, however, entails a careful reading of the entire Bible, grasping both the fact of the story and the spirit of the story. Understanding the Bible: Head and Heart provides prose summaries for helping the reader to understand and remember the fact of the story and poetic summaries for helping the reader to experience the story and thereby to more readily ingest its spirit. Since Understanding the Bible: Head and Heart would be lengthy under one cover, it is divided into three parts. Part One addresses the Old Testament, Part Two addresses Matthew through Acts, and Part Three—this publication—addresses Romans through Revelation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book of Romans is one of the best-loved books in the entire Bible. Paul's explanation of the doctrine of justification by faith is rooted deep within the hearts of most Christians. Further, the acknowledgment that we are not under law, but under grace has given Christians freedom from the bondage of legalism for centuries. However, Romans is a complex book filled with difficult theology. To make this revolutionary book more accessible to the common man, Alan Johnson has written Everyman's Bible Commentary on Romans. The original two volumes are now combined into one complete volume. The commentary is also updated, expanded, and revised. The easy style and careful presentation make this an excellent commentary for laymen and pastors alike. Study Paul's discussion of the believer's new life in Christ, with their release from sin and death, and the faithfulness of God. Be encouraged and strengthened with a more in-depth understanding of your position before Christ with this commentary on Romans.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two great writers and their books that have had an influenced on me in the writing of this book are Jonathan Swifts (1667-1745) and John Bunyan (1628-1688). Jonathan Swift masterpiece titled 'Gulliver's Travels' was an allegorical attack on the hypocrisy of the human behavior that he witnessed in almost every level of life in England, especially on the political stage. John Bunyan was the author of another famous allegorical book about a soul in search of salvation-'Pilgrim's Progress.' I do not believe this book will in any way approach the level of these two great masterpieces, but like Swift and Bunyan, I too have some comments about the behavior of my fellow Spacelanders (as I like to refer to them). What do they really believe in? What have they committed and dedicated their lives to? Because I believe the answers to these questions are the determining factors of their behavior. Like all allegorical books you will need a great imagination. But as Oscar Wilde said, "Imagination is a quality given man to compensate him for what he is not, and a sense of humor was provided to console him for what he is." Edwin Willwerth has been married for over fifty years and is the father of three children. He was a high school mathematics teacher for thirty years. Besides teaching in several public and private schools within the United States, he has also taught in Paraguay for one year, Nepal for two years and China for six months. He has been very active in his local church, serving for a number of years as a Sunday School teacher and later as head of the Sunday School Department. He was the Missionary Director within his church for several years. He has also spent time on Missionary projects in Haiti and Campeche, Mexico.
