The book is of great importance because it is one of the first to address Iran’s relations with Arab Shiism from a viewpoint that encompasses the controversial political constitutional jurisprudent theory—which is a point of disagreement in post-Khomeini Iran among the Arab jurists and the Marajaya [the Shiite religious authority]. Book excerpt: Deng Xiaoping is by his own merit and by what is known in Chinese popular culture as the ''Divine Mandate'' or natural might, the Father of Modern and Economically Developed China. Although not an official title, the term Supreme Leader is applied to the Maximum Leader of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), and of the Government of the People's Republic of China (PRC) and is ultimately an informal term to refer to the most prominent political leader in China in each era. Deng Xiao Ping was never President of the People's Republic of China as many outsiders think, but rather his political leadership surpassed the presidents of his time, both during his term as Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (8 March 1978 - 17 June 1983), Chairman of the Central Military Commission (28 June 1981 - 9 November 1989), and Chairman of the Central Consultative Commission (13 September 1982 - 2 November 1987), respectively. The Central Advisory Commission (in (CAC) was an organ of the Communist Party of China during the era of Deng Xiaoping's supreme leadership, and was a select group of senior Party members, which in practice had more authority than the then Chinese President Li Xiannian's own executive, President of China from 1983 to 1988. The socio-political evolution and industrial development of the People's Republic of China after Mao Zedong (December 26, 1893 - September 9, 1976) was greatly influenced by the vision of a group of veteran leaders of the Communist Party of China - known as the Eight Elders or the Eight Immortals - of whom the leadership of Deng Xiao Ping stands out historically and politically. This book is a small glimpse into an era of transformation and political transition of the country that a few decades later has become the world's leading economy, and a feared and respected adversary in all nations. This is the Story of One of the Good Guys, Deng Xiao Ping. Deng Xiaoping's story and career is an example of all that can be achieved with tenacity, persistence, honesty and nationalism. Book excerpt: Ali Khamenei brings wisdom to the world for the first time in English verse. These fine poems with the spirit of ancient Persia will soon cajole the last infidel into submission because the poor fools suffer too much under the yoke of decadent corruption and hedonism. On the animal words of the West: they carry those sorrows into their houses like pets, and when bitten by carriers of plague run naked in the streets with the guns of rudeness. As more of the infidels lie down with their leadership dogs, they will catch the ticks of smirks, and the fleas of the Roman Circus. It is said that in the West, the streets are paved with fools' gold, and the female singers run naked in the streets, having many babies.Sometimes a study of ancient poetry can be a cure for these maladies, and is a pleasant way to spend an evening before one is tempted to indulge in debauchery, and before the readers are inclined to remove the clothes of modesty. It is best to be lost in verse while I establish the World Caliphate.

These fine comments with the spirit of ancient Persia will soon cajole the last infidel into submission because the poor fools suffer too much under the yoke of decadent corruption and hedonism. Vulgar speech and cursing are common. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Shaul Mishal and Ori Goldberg explore the ways in which Shiite leaderships in Iran and Lebanon approach themselves and their world. Contrary to the violent and radical image of religious leaderships in the Islamic Republic of Iran and Lebanese Hizballah, the political vision and practice of these leaderships view the world as a middle ground, shying away from absolutist and extremist tendencies. The political leadership assumed by Shiite religious scholars in Iran and Lebanon has transformed Shiite Islam from a marginalized minority to a highly politicized avant garde of Muslim presence, revitalized the practice and causes of political Islam in its struggle for legitimacy and authority, and reshaped the politics of the Middle East and the globe in its image. Utilizing approaches from social theory, history, theology, and literary criticism, the book presents these leaderships as pragmatic, interpretative entities with the potential to form fruitful relationships between Shiite leadership and the non-Shiite world.

Book excerpt: Fifteen eminent social scientists from North America and Eastern Europe met under the auspices of Northwestern University's Comparative Politics Program to discuss the significance and characteristics of changes in political leadership in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union since World War II. The presentations at the conference were edited and re-written following the discussion. They are incorporated into this comprehensive analysis of political leadership in European communist countries since World War II. This volume is divided up into four parts and fourteen different chapters. Part One examines the theoretical questions of leadership in European socialist countries. Part Two provides a factual perspective, including contemporary quantitative data and biographical analysis. Part Three discusses the interaction of the leadership and society. Jan Triska's concluding overview relates specific chapters to the informal discussions at the conference. Some of the notable contributions include "Historical Development of the Communist Theory of Leadership," Alfred G. Meyer; "The Theory of Political Leadership and the Issue of Totalitarianism," Carl J. Friedrich; "Marxist Theories of Leadership and Bureaucracy," Andras Hegedus; "Trends in Top Political Leadership in USSR," Frederick C. Barghoorn; "Representation of Career Types in Soviet Political Leadership," Frederic Fleron; "The Soviet Appartchiki," Michael P. Gehlen. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The next president of the United States faces innumerable complex problems, from a possible prolonged recession to climate change. An immediate difficulty for the president will be the global conflict between the West and Islamic jihadists and state sponsors of terrorism. The creation of the Department of Homeland Security and the recommendations of the 9/11 Commission notwithstanding, the administration needs to be armed and ready to tackle much more in the areas of intelligence and counterterrorism. The president can and must assume a hands-on, informed leadership role if the United States wants to make progress in the war on terror. Gary Berntsen has written this book as a guide for an incoming president and White House staff so that they may master current human intelligence and counterterrorism operations. After reading its highly specific recommendations and policy prescriptions, the president and his or her staff will be able to draft a First Directive for the leadership of the intelligence and national security communities outlining how the administration wants those communities to proceed and to defend the nation’s interests. Human Intelligence, Counterterrorism, and National Leadership will be of interest to legislators, policymakers, and anyone concerned about intelligence and terrorism policy. With a foreword by Seth G. Jones, a political scientist at the RAND Corporation and Adjunct Professor in the Security Studies Program at Georgetown University. He is the author of In the Graveyard of Empires: America’s War in Afghanistan and The Rise of European Security Cooperation.

Book excerpt: A leading foreign policy thinker uses Chinese political theory to explain why some powers rise as others decline and what this means for the international order Why has China grown increasingly important in the world arena while lagging behind the United States and its allies across certain sectors? Using the lens of classical Chinese political theory, Leadership and the Rise of Great Powers explains China’s expanding influence by presenting a moral-realist theory that attributes the rise and fall of great powers to political leadership. Yan Xuetong shows that the stronger a rising state’s political leadership, the more likely it is to displace a prevailing state in the international system. Yan shows how rising states like China transform the international order by reshaping power distribution and norms, and he considers America’s relative decline in international stature even as its economy, education system, military, political institutions, and technology hold steady. Leadership and the Rise of Great Powers offers a provocative, alternative perspective on the changing dominance of states.

This book gives full weight to the material prominence of leaders and to the way that leadership operates as a medium of political themes, issues and concepts. At the same time, the aim is to reduce the dissonance associated with the study of leadership, fragmented as it is, into discrete studies, multiple approaches, and priority disputes based upondisciplinary boundaries. The book aims to put the subject of political leadership back together within a more integrated framework, and provides an in-depth engagement with leadership's analytical challenges whilst retaining illustrative space for the immediacy, allure and drama of leadership in action.

Book excerpt: Lao Tzu, Marx, the Buddha, Ibsen, Machiavelli — these are just a few of the world’s great thinkers who have weighed in on the subject of leadership over the centuries. Yet, the contemporary student of leadership often overlooks many of these names in favour of more recent theorists hailing from the social sciences. Understanding Leadership: An Arts and Humanities Perspective takes a different angle, employing the works of the great philosophers, authors and artists found in world civilization and presenting an arts and humanities perspective on the study of leadership. The authors build their conceptual framework using The Five Components of Leadership Model, which recognizes the leader, the followers, the goal, the environmental context, and the cultural values and norms that make up the leadership process. Supporting the text are a wealth of case studies which reflect on works such as Ayn Rand’s novella Anthem, Eugène Delacroix’s painting Liberty Leading the People, Charlie Chaplin’s film Modern Times, Athol Fugard’s play "Master Harold" . . . and the Boys, Lao Tzu’s poetic work Tao Te Ching, and Antonín Dvořák’s New World Symphony. The authors also introduce studies from various world cultures to particularly illustrate the role cultural values and norms play in leadership. This illuminating framework promotes the multidimensional thinking that is necessary for understanding and problem solving in a complex world. Understanding Leadership: An Arts and Humanities Perspective will be a valuable textbook for both undergraduate and postgraduate leadership students, while leadership professionals will also appreciate the book’s unique liberal arts and cultural approach.

Fomum convincingly shows from Scriptures why God chooses certain people, as well as the kind of people He chooses for leadership. The content carries a strong voice of Scripture on simple down-to-earth godly leadership principles, with examples from both the Old and New Testaments. Both the aspiring as well as those already involved in Christian leadership will find their lot. The leader must set and maintain a leadership gap between himself and those he is leading. The author suggests twelve such domains in which the potential leader should seek and establish distinction. For, no one can honestly lead from behind. You cannot lead those who are ahead of you in the knowledge and pursuit of God. Never! Leadership is a call to give God to the people. This will be a priceless gift for your leader!

Book excerpt: A provocative departure from conventional thinking, Bad Leadership compels us to see leadership in its entirety Kellerman argues that the dark side of leadership-;from rigidity and callousness to corruption and cruelty-;is not an aberration. Rather bad leadership is as ubiquitous as it is insidious-;and so must be more carefully examined and better understood. Drawing on high-profile contemporary examples-;from Mary Meeker to David Koresh, Bill Clinton to Radovan Karadzic, Al Dunlap to Leona Helmsley-;Kellerman explores seven primary types of bad leadership and dissects why and how leaders cross the line from good to bad. The book also illuminates the critical role of followers, revealing how they collaborate in, and sometimes even cause, bad leadership. Daring and counterintuitive, Bad Leadership makes clear that we need to face the dark side in order to become better leaders and followers ourselves.

Book excerpt: A Pulitzer Prize–winning historian examines transformational leaders from Moses to Machiavelli to Martin Luther King Jr. in this “impressive book” (The Washington Post). Historian and political scientist James MacGregor Burns has spent much of his career documenting the use and misuse of power by leaders throughout history. In this groundbreaking study, Burns examines the qualities that make certain leaders—in America and elsewhere—succeed as transformative figures. Through insightful anecdotes and historical analysis, Burns scrutinizes the charisma, vision, and persuasive power of individuals able to imbue followers with a common sense of purpose, from the founding fathers to FDR, Gandhi to Napoleon. Since its original publication in 1970, Leadership has set the standard for scholarship in the field.
