Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though development researchers have proven that the participation of women is necessary for effective sustainable development, development practitioners still largely lack culturally appropriate, gender-sensitive tools for including women, especially women living in poverty. Current tools used in the development approach often favour the skill set of the development practitioner and are a mismatch with the traditional, gendered knowledge and skills many women who are living in poverty do have. This study explores three case studies from India, Ethiopia, and the Guatemala that have successfully used applied theatre for women’s participation in sustainable development. This interdisciplinary book has the opportunity to be the first to bring together the theory, scholarship and practice of theatre for women’s participation in sustainable development in an international context. This work will be of great interest to scholars and practitioners in a wide variety of fields who are looking for creative solutions for utilizing the contributions of women for solving our global goals to live in a sustainable way on this one planet in a just and equitable manner.

Book excerpt: Are you're a Type A, stressed out, work, work, work achievement junkie, who's not really satisfied with the life you're living? And you don't really appreciate the "touchy-feely" pseudo-psychologist self-improvement gurus writing today? Well, I've got an excellent book recommendation for you. The Daily Six is written by a hard-driving, Type A, no-nonsense businessman who ran headlong into the "brick wall of enlightenment." Chappelear calls that brick way his "Gift of Devastation." That "gift" helped him change his focus and his life. He learned how to build a whole and balanced life for himself, his family, and his company. The Daily Six lays out how to adopt Chappelear's six simple tenets and start taking the actions that will produce the same balance and positive results without the need for a brick wall. You'll find John Chappelear is someone you can respect and believe because he's lived these real-world experiences, and he makes perfect sense. Like the good businessman he is, Chappelear gets right to his six key points. Next, he outlines and explains how to use these six practices. And how to incorporate them into your daily life. The result is a sense of becoming more successful, prosperous, and personally fulfilled. John's minimalist approach includes exactly enough instructive detail and plenty of apt anecdotes to keep a smooth flow of interest in this comfortable and very readable book. He is both succinct and persuasive. Best of all, he doesn't ask you to add time and tasks to your already hectic life. He asks you to change your focus and select the most important things you can do to live well and happily. And to drop the unnecessary busyness, stress, and worry that you never needed in the first place. Take the short time needed to read this book. You'll be glad.

Book excerpt: Extreme poverty does not have to exist. When Christians accept that fact and start living accordingly, we will find the solution is already within our reach. Worldwide, 18,000 children die from preventable causes every day. If that statistic leaves you feeling powerless, you are not alone—but you are wrong. If a false sense of powerlessness has lulled you into apathy, it’s time to shake off the grogginess of low expectations and get to work. We can make this world a place where kids do not die from easily preventable diseases. In Hope Rising, Scott Todd of Compassion International pens a galvanizing, comprehensive vision of the movement that will eradicate extreme global poverty through transformative Christian generosity—and do it within our lifetime. Todd provides riveting evidence to show that we are much closer to that goal than you might think. According to Todd, we live in an historic moment, and chances are you are already part of it. The gospel is already reshaping lives from thoughtless consumption to informed concern. Twenty-first-century Christians are generating multi-continent grassroots movements through communications and travel. Public and private sectors are working together. It’s a whole new era of philanthropy, compassion, and justice aimed at eradicating the pandemic of extreme global poverty. This is a future we have the God-given power to create. This is the history we hope to write. As Todd envisions, “The twenty-first-century Christians embraced the entirety of their gospel—the truths it proclaims and the muscles it demands—with a new integrity. They did not deteriorate into humanist liberalism, as some had feared. Nor did they pile works on top of Grace...They simply determined that their world did not need to have children dying of preventable causes such as dirty water.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors offer a framework that allows organizations to go beyond quick fixes and fundraising strategies to a broader paradigm that encompasses community and organization building. What if every person involved with an organization was fully engaged and shared a common goal? What if the efforts of a relatively small ring of staff and board members were amplified by everyone touched by the organization, including current and former volunteers, staff, board members, clients, constituents, funders and supporters? That, the authors show, is the way a charismatic organization operates. The book provides numerous examples of how successful organizations have made this shift, as well as action steps that all organizations can take to perform better. "In today’s interdependent world, nonprofit organizations have more opportunity than ever before to make a difference in people’s lives. Drawing upon their extensive experience in public service, Shirley Sagawa and Deborah Jospin identify the traits that give successful nonprofits the competitive edge they need to maximize their effectiveness and sustainability. The Charismatic Organization: Eight Ways to Grow a Nonprofit That Builds Buzz, Delights Donors, and Energizes Employees draws an authoritative blueprint for using social capital to transform good intentions into concrete results."– Former President Bill Clinton

Book excerpt: HIS is the children’s own day, and no assumption of dignity on the part of their elders can deter them from exercising the privileges granted to them by acknowledged custom and precedent. “April fool! April fool!” cries my little nephew, as he dances with delight to see his aunt walk out of the room with a piece of white paper dangling from a hooked pin, attached to her dress. “April fool! April fool!” shout the children in the street, thus announcing the success of some practical joke. “April fool!” laughs everyone at the table, when some unfortunate bites into a brown, wholesome-looking cruller, only to find it a delusion and a snare, the coat of a cruller, but the inside of cotton. “April fool! April fool!” is what even the little sparrows seem to chirp, as with a “s-w-h-e-r-r” they sweep down from the tree and, frightening away the kitten, take forcible possession of her bone. What does all this mean? Why is the first day of April called “All-Fools-Day,” and when or where did the custom of the day originate? Who can tell? No one seems to know. Even the derivation of the word April does not appear to have been definitely settled, and this saucy month, with her mischievous tricks and pranks, her surprises and mysteries, fools and puzzles our wisest men. Through many centuries the observance of All-Fools-Day has descended to us. In many climes and many countries this day is chosen as the proper time for playing tricks on the unsuspecting. “Festum Fatuorum,” or “Fools’ Holiday,” is what it was called in England at the time of the arrival of the early Christians in that country. Easily caught like the mackerel, which are plentiful on the French coast in April and are said to be deficient in understanding, the April fool in France derives his name from that fish, and is called “Poisson d’Avril” or “April Fish,” and again, “Silly Mackerel.” From the cuckoo, a bird that does not know enough to build its own nest, the appellation of “gowk” is taken, and is given to the foolish one in Scotland who allows himself to be duped on this day.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by Fortune 100 executive Dan Gallagher, The Self-Aware Leader is a unique approach on how to become a more effective leader by increasing self-awareness in four pillars of leadership. By integrating the concepts of reinvention, servant leadership, and business transformation into a single framework that has been validated in research, The Self Aware Leader emphasises taking a calculated approach to change rather than merely reacting to change. The Self-Aware Leader also helps readers recognise three basic truths which are crucial to success within organisations: approaches to management have a shelf life; middle managers are frequently caught between “a rock and a hard place”; and, with conservatism on the rise, becoming and remaining an effective leader is extremely complex. This book offers two key takeaways: 1) a new mental framework on leadership more appropriate for today’s business conditions; and 2) a functional, practical plan for putting the newly learned concepts presented into daily practice.

He's been an altar boy, a bartender, a fat kid, a smuggler, a biker, a prince of New England. But before all that, he was a bomb that exploded his parents' lives-or so he was told. In Dirtbag, Massachusetts, Fitzgerald, with warmth and humor, recounts his ongoing search for forgiveness, a more far-reaching vision of masculinity, and a more expansive definition of family and self. Fitzgerald's memoir-in-essays begins with a childhood that moves at breakneck speed from safety to violence, recounting an extraordinary pilgrimage through trauma to self-understanding and, ultimately, acceptance. From growing up in a Boston homeless shelter to bartending in San Francisco, from smuggling medical supplies into Burma to his lifelong struggle to make peace with his body, Fitzgerald strives to take control of his own story: one that aims to put aside anger, isolation, and entitlement to embrace the idea that one can be generous to oneself by being generous to others. Gritty and clear-eyed, loud-hearted and beautiful, Dirtbag, Massachusetts is a rollicking book that might also be a lifeline.

Book excerpt: From migrant workers and media freedom to housing slums, this book captures the gamut of social issues that plague Asia, telling the stories behind thirteen committed individuals who have effected great change in their respective causes. These stories are about the behemoths such as Dharma Master Cheng Yen from Taiwan and Sir Fazle Hasan Abed from Bangladesh who lead some of the world’s largest nongovernmental organisations; to Aki Ra from Cambodia and Sompop Jakantra from Thailand whose smaller teams have saved hundreds of lives from landmines and prostitution respectively. The social heroes portrayed have pursued seemingly quotidian causes that citizens of developed countries may take for granted, such as toilets in India, decent housing for the poor in Hong Kong, and mainly making life better for those whom society appears to have forgotten. Reader Reviews: “The people working to address social issues are not always as well-documented as the issues themselves…it is important to bring an awareness of them into the mainstream media. It’s easy to become overwhelmed by societal injustice, but these stories show that even when you can’t count on your government to protect your rights, individuals working in social justice can make positive change.” – Camille Neale, AWARE “This book is an excellent snapshot of 12 Asian countries and their circumstances and challenges.” – Cheong Suk-Wai, The Straits Times
