Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Luis Buñuel (1900-1983) was one of the truly great film-makers of the twentieth century. Shaped by a repressive Jesuit education and a bourgeois family background, he reacted against both, escaped to Paris, and was soon embraced by André Breton's official surrealist group. His early films are his most aggressive and shocking, the slicing of the eyeball in Un Chien andalou (1929) one of the most memorable episodes in the history of cinema. The Forgotten Ones (1950) and He (1952), made in Mexico, were followed, from 1960, in Spain and France, by the films for which he is best known: Viridiana (1961), Belle de jour (1966), Tristana (1970), The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (1972), and That Obscure Object of Desire (1977). BR> Gwynne Edwards analyses the films in the context of Buñuel's personal obsessions - sex, bourgeois values, and religion - suggesting that the film-maker experienced a degree of sexual inhibition surprising in a surrealist. GWYNNE EDWARDS is Professor of Spanish at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The marriage of philosophy and fiction in the first third of Spain's twentieth century was a fertile one. It produced some truly notable offspring—novels that cross genre boundaries to find innovative forms, and treatises that fuse literature and philosophy in new ways. In her illuminating interdisciplinary study of Spanish fiction of the "Silver Age," Roberta Johnson places this important body of Spanish literature in context through a synthesis of social, literary, and philosophical history. Her examination of the work of Miguel de Unamuno, Pio Baroja, Azorin, Ramon Perez de Ayala, Juan Ramon Jimenez, Gabriel Miro, Pedro Salinas, Rosa Chacel, and Benjamin Jarnes brings to light philosophical frictions and debates and opens new interpersonal and intertextual perspectives on many of the period's most canonical novels. Johnson reformulates the traditional discussion of generations and "isms" by viewing the period as an intergenerational complex in which writers with similar philosophical and personal interests constituted dynamic groupings that interacted and constantly defined and redefined one another. Current narratological theories, including those of Todorov, Genette, Bakhtin, and Martinez Bonati, assist in teasing out the intertextual maneuvers and philosophical conflicts embedded in the novels of the period, while the sociological and biographical material bridges the philosophical and literary analyses. The result, solidly grounded in original archival research, is a convincingly complete picture of Spain's intellectual world in the first thirty years of this century. Crossfire should revolutionize thinking about the Generation of '98 and the Generation of '14 by identifying the heterogeneous philosophical sources of each and the writers' reactions to them in fiction.

Book excerpt: Koto y Yo is a pioneering work about the feelings and intensity of fatherhood that we still rarely read—or imagine is possible—from a male writer. Koto y Yo is a travel book that is a voyage around Poble Sec—a working class neighbourhood of Barcelona—and, at the same time, a journey to the core of what it means to be human. It is a love song to the changing seasons, to parenthood, to the passing of time, to language, and to the inhabitants of the city. It’s easy to forget the beauty and magic when you’re a new parent, what with the overwhelming sleep deprivation, mountain of dirty nappies, and hours spent trying to get the baby to sleep so you can finish your dinner while it’s still warm. Koto y Yo allows us to slow down, take a breath, and to keep our eyes and senses open to every tiny moment of incandescent beauty in those early days when—for parent and baby alike—the world feels brand new.

It is not intended as a substitute for all other lines of study, but it will provide a basic knowledge that can be expanded and developed. the reader is urged to read as wide a range of books as possible and to examine whatever music he or she possesses to identify further examples of the points discussed. the examples should be played and carefully listened to. the study of music is sterile if confined to making marks on paper, no matter how well understood intellectually; no real value attaches to a theoretical study of music unless it is directly related to aural experience and its value is reduced further if it is not related to the music of one's instrument.Contents include Musical Sounds and Their Origins, the Organization of single notes, Melody, Intervals, the Beginning of Harmony-Triads, Functional Harmony and Cadences, Primary Harmony and Cadences, Primary Triads and Substitution, Modulation and Transition, Secondary Sevenths, Other Diatonic Secondary Sevenths, the Cadential Six-four, the Dominant Ninth, Secondary Ninths, Chords of the Eleventh and Thirteenth, Chromatic Alteration of Diatonic Chords, chromatic Harmony, Remote Modulation, Pedal Points, and Steps Beyond

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over one hundred vignettes in Stories of Life and Death create haunting images of the author's favorite subjects: women in love, children coping with tragedy, eccentrics, the emotions of compassion, bitterness, envy and longing.Meet Mercedita Saro, the shy, perfectly-groomed beggar-child of the local drunk, whom Jimenez loves, protects, and treats with sweets, forbidden by her father. And Max, "the blue child," a West Indian boy traveling on the same ship as Jimenez to live with relatives in South America, who covered his black face with white powder "to look whiter to my brothers." See a woman in love, "white tender, bray, submissive, delicate." and the tiny ray of sun awakening a baby, which "has opened in his eyes a magic and flowery garden that holds him bewitched." Feel sadness at the death of a village girl, empathy for the mother of a sailor lost at sea, and compassion for an angry man who gets drunk for the first time. The author creates an impressionistic landscape with subtle nuances of light and shadow, leaving tantalizing ambiguities to be resolved only in the eye of the beholder. As might be assumed from the title bestowed on this work, Jimenez's prose and poetical observations of the world around him, previously encountered in Platero and I, take on a somewhat darker more transcendent hue in this further collection. Gone is the unifying theme of itinerant man and donkey, and the physical boundaries of time and space. Here Jimenez allows his poetic vision to sweep far and wide, distilling and concentrating his art into thumbnail sketches of such disparate characters among many are a beggar-girl, a grape-harvester, an elderly canary and even the moon itself. Prefaced by a scholarly introduction from the translator, this is a fine and sensitive translation which captures gloriously the sheer lyrical beauty of Jimenez's writing. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What distinguishes an adventure novel from a historical novel? Can the same text belong to several genres? More to one than to another? Have some existing genres been overlooked? To answer these and similar questions, José Calvo Tello combines methods from Linguistics (lexicography), Literary Studies (genre theory), and Computer Science (machine learning, natural language processing). Located in the interdisciplinary field of Digital Humanities, this study analyzes a newly developed corpus of 358 Spanish novels of the silver age (1880-1939), which includes authors like Baroja, Pardo Bazán, or Valle-Inclán. Calvo Tello's key result is a graph-based model of literary genre that reconciles recent theoretical approaches.
