Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "When the first armchair smashed into the asphalt, Sergeant Ashmouni was at his usual spot on the median of the Nile Corniche, trapped by the road's twin currents turbulently flowing forth to Maadi and back to Old Cairo. He was wiping the sweat away from his eyes with his worn out sleeve and in the process adding a new stain to his white traffic-police uniform when surprise from the thunderous impact catapulted him into the fast lane of the side of the road closest to the Nile." Thus opens this fast-paced city thriller laced with dry humor that takes us inside Borg al-Saada 'Tower of Happiness,' one of the luxury high-rises planted like alien bodies amid the fields along the Nile south of Cairo and inside the sordid lives and lavish lifestyles of its superrich and famous denizens. The naked, strangled body of Ahlam, a beautiful young actress, is discovered in one of the elevators, and as the police investigation gets under way, we meet many of the tower's strange characters: the owner's agent, Kasib Bey, overweight, toupeed, and decked in gold chains; wealthy contractor Abd al-Tawab Mabruk Basha (Tutu Basha to his friends), insomniac since Ahlam's murder; Abd al-Malak, a psychic with a Ph.D. in genetic engineering from MIT; Farah, his erstwhile sweetheart, who has become one of the very candy dolls she used to scorn; belly-dancer Lula Hamdi, who would be able to see Timbuktu if she stood on top of a pile of all her money; Madame Esmeralda, the society lady from Chile; and the homely Dr. Mahgub, somewhat less well off than his neighbors. And of course there is Antar the naughty boy who roams the tower, enters apartments, and overhears conversations, unsettling and exposing the decadent occupants and their relationships.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlike The Literary Atlas of Cairo, which focuses on the literary geopolitics of the cityscape, this companion volume immerses the reader in the complex network of socioeconomic and cultural lives in the city. The seven chapters first introduce the reader to representations of some of Cairo's prominent profiles, both political and cultural, and their impact on the city's literary geography, before presenting a spectrum of readings of the city by its multiethnic, multinational, and multilingual writers across class, gender, and generation. Daunting images of colonial school experiences and startling contrasts of postcolonial educational realities are revealed, while Cairo's moments of political participation and oppression are illustrated, as well as the space accorded to women within the city across history and class. The city's marginals are placed on its literary map, alongside representations of the relationship between writing and drugs, and the places, paraphernalia, and products of the drug world across class and time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This cross-disciplinary, ethnographic, contextualized, and empirical volume explores the meaning and significance of urban space, and maps the spatial inscription of power on the mega-city of Cairo. Suspicious of collective life and averse to power-sharing, Egyptian governance structures weaken but do not stop the public's role in the remaking of their city. What happens to a city where neo-liberalism has scaled back public services and encouraged the privatization of public goods, while the vast majority cannot afford the effects of such policies? Who wins and loses in the "march to the modern and the global" as the government transforms urban spaces and markets in the name of growth, security, tourism, and modernity? How do Cairenes struggle with an ambiguous and vulnerable legal and bureaucratic environment when legality is a privilege affordable only to the few or the connected? This companion volume to Cairo Cosmopolitan (AUC Press, 2006) further develops the central insights of the Cairo School of Urban Studies.

Book excerpt: In the creation of electronic and digital art, a research and development phase is almost always necessary. Research sometimes concentrates on the use of existing technologies in the content of the work, and at other times on the development of new technologies (hard-, soft- and netware) needed to realize the intended project. This research is notably interdisciplinary, linking visual and sound artists with engineers, programmers and designers as well as with scientists from diverse fields. The projects are often carried out in "art labs" which have been set up in the past fifteen years around the world especially for this purpose. aRt&D: Artistic Research and Development lays open this new, investigative field of art by looking at a number of characteristic and thought-provoking projects. At the same time, it develops a theoretical framework for situating and evaluating this important new artistic practice.

Barri Flowers, award-winning criminologist and bestselling author of Murder During the Chicago World’s Fair, Murder at the Pencil Factory, and Murder of the Banker’s Daughter, comes the riveting historical true crime short, Murder of the Doctor’s Wife: The 1867 Crimes of Bridget Durgan. On the evening of Monday, February 25, 1867, Mary Ellen Coriell was brutally murdered at her home in Newmarket, New Jersey. The cold-blooded nature of the murder was shocking enough for residents of the town and elsewhere, but even more disturbing was that the culprit turned out to be the victim’s housemaid, an attractive young Irishwoman named Bridget Durgan. The circumstances surrounding the murder--including jealousy, obsession, and delusion--were as old as time itself. The crime would come at a very steep price for the murderess who would be executed for the heinous act. The death of Mary Ellen Coriell also weighed heavily on the object of Bridget’s affections, the heartbroken victim’s husband, Dr. William Coriell, who would be left to care for the couple’s young daughter alone. The unspeakable tragedy would also be felt throughout the community for many years to come. The sad tale of Mary Ellen Coriell's untimely demise at the hands of someone she trusted and was ultimately betrayed by is a must for students of history, true crime, and homicide. A complete bonus story, Murder of the French Lover, chronicles the May 21, 1892, scandalous murder of Madame Lassimonne in Paris, France, by romantic rival, Claire Reymond, and its stunning outcome. Other bonus material include excerpts from R. Barri Flowers' bestselling true crime shorts, Murder During the Chicago World’s Fair, Dead at the Saddleworth Moor, Missing or Murdered, and an excerpt from the author’s true crime book, Serial Killers and Prostitutes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A philosophical investigation into the connections between trust and violence The limiting of violence through state powers is one of the central projects of the modern age. Why then have recent centuries been so bloody? In Trust and Violence, acclaimed German intellectual and public figure Jan Philipp Reemtsma demonstrates that the aim of decreasing and deterring violence has gone hand in hand with the misleading idea that violence is abnormal and beyond comprehension. We would be far better off, Reemtsma argues, if we acknowledged the disturbing fact that violence is normal. At the same time, Reemtsma contends that violence cannot be fully understood without delving into the concept of trust. Not in violence, but in trust, rests the foundation of true power. Reemtsma makes his case with a wide-ranging history of ideas about violence, from ancient philosophy through Shakespeare and Schiller to Michel Foucault, and by considering specific cases of extreme violence from medieval torture to the Holocaust and beyond. In the midst of this gloomy account of human tendencies, Reemtsma shrewdly observes that even dictators have to sleep at night and cannot rely on violence alone to ensure their safety. These authoritarian leaders must trust others while, by means other than violence, they must convince others to trust them. The history of violence is therefore a history of the peculiar relationship between violence and trust, and a recognition of trust's crucial place in humanity. A broad and insightful book that touches on philosophy, sociology, and political theory, Trust and Violence sheds new, and at times disquieting, light on two integral aspects of our society.

Book excerpt: Trying to evade intelligence agencies out to assassinate him, the Cerebellum, an Egyptian scientist with a past association with the Iraqi nuclear program, rents a room on the roof of a brothel in a Cairo slum. His interaction with the other residents is limited; instead he spends most of his time in the virtual world, where he has a love affair with Candy Girl, a gorgeous avatar. On the other side of the planet, an ex-NSA agent has joined a secret organization whose mission is to assassinate Iraqi scientists. He does not allow his doubts about the legality-or the ethics-of his mission to interfere with his work. He chases his victim relentlessly, but when his top-of-the-line equipment fails to locate the Cerebellum in Cairo's slums, he takes the chase to the virtual world.
