Book excerpt: Religion ¿ The Defamer of God brings together two perilous topics of conversation ¿ organized religion and politics ¿ and amalgamates them into a timely referenced, scholarly researched, and topically refreshing book unrivaled by any other in its class that reveals how these two subjects have worked in perfect unison to form the modern world to where we are today in regards to global crime, terrorism, political servitude, the curtailment of individual freedom in democracy, a broken global economy, and the suppression of genuine faith and individual free-will. Organized religion is maligning freedom of speech, genuine democracy, the struggling single parent, the oppressed woman, the loving same-sex relationship, the sexually liberated young person, the victim of street crime and global terrorism, the ignored desperate-hearted in our midst, the searcher of truth and justice, and the sincere seeker of faith ¿ while mankind ambivalently acquiesces to the destruction of personal freedom, self-esteem, and its very self. The Defamer of God pulls no punches, and boldly suggests an alternative to both religion and political servitude ¿ that being a personal faith of free will that refuses to be driven any longer by fear, political spin, pious tradition, social expectation, bad history, and political correctness ¿ or alternatively, no false-hearted faith at all, when manifest as forced-upon and traditionally-based religiosity that only creates modern-day dictators, terrorist mass murderers, and self-righteous stumbling blocks to genuine faith in our workplaces, sanctuaries, communities, streets, societies, and nations in the modern 21st Century in which we find ourselves in.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in German in 1988, The Apocalypse in Germany is now available for the first time in English. A fitting subject for the dawn of the new millennium, the apocalypse has intrigued humanity for the last two thousand years, serving as both a fascinating vision of redemption and a profound threat. A cross-disciplinary study, The Apocalypse in Germany analyzes fundamental aspects of the apocalypse as a religious, political, and aesthetic phenomenon. Author Klaus Vondung draws from religious, philosophical, and political texts, as well as works of art and literature. Using classic Jewish and Christian apocalyptic texts as symbolic and historical paradigms, Vondung determines the structural characteristics and the typical images of the apocalyptic worldview. He clarifies the relationship between apocalyptic visions and utopian speculations and explores the question of whether modern apocalypses can be viewed as secularizations of the Judeo-Christian models. Examining sources from the eighteenth century to the present, Vondung considers the origins of German nationalism, World War I, National Socialism, and the apocalyptic tendencies in Marxism as well as German literature--from the fin de siècle to postmodernism. His analysis of the existential dimension of the apocalypse explores the circumstances under which particular individuals become apocalyptic visionaries and explains why the apocalyptic tradition is so prevalent in Germany. The Apocalypse in Germany offers an interdisciplinary perspective that will appeal to a broad audience. This book will also be of value to readers with an interest in German studies, as it clarifies the riddles of Germany's turbulent history and examines the profile of German culture, particularly in the past century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first study to develop a theory of sacrifice and then apply it to the sources of early Judaism as well as Jesus's activity. Ritual sacrifice was one of the greatest concerns and most widely shared activities among Jews prior to the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem. There is therefore a pressing need for systematic understanding of sacrifice, both as an element of Judaic religion and a context for Jesus's activity. The Temple of Jesus provides a theoretical model of sacrifice and develops that model to analyze classic texts from the Hebrew Scriptures and the Jewish War of Josephus, and it argues that Jesus can only be appreciated as driven by a program to enact his own conception of Israel's purity in sacrifice in order to occasion the disclosure of God's kingdom. Chilton contends that sacrifice is construed as a fundamentally social, "pre-civilized" activity involving pragmata as defined as pure, an emotional affect for participants, and an ideology according to which sacrifice occasions a change of life in the community, thus rejecting current anthropological studies that attempt to explain sacrifice genetically. He shows that texts from Ezekiel, Leviticus, and Deuteronomy share a conviction that the covenant with Israel ensures the validity of sacrifice, even as they define purity in various ways and emphasize differing affects of sacrifice. Finally, Chilton provides a new approach to Jesus, comparing and contrasting his occupation of the Temple with the cultic activities of prominent Pharisees of his period.

Book excerpt: At the play's beginning, the argument gives the following summary of the play's action: "Gorboduc, King of Britain, divided his realm in his lifetime to his sons, Ferrex and Porrex. The sons fell to dissention. The younger killed the elder. The mother that more dearly loved the elder, for revenge killed the younger. The people, moved with the cruelty of the fact, rose in rebellion and slew both father and mother. The nobility assembled and most terribly destroyed the rebels. And afterward for want of issue of the prince, whereby the succession of the crown became uncertain, they fell to civil war in which both they and many of their issues were slain, and the land for a long time almost desolate and miserably wasted."

Book excerpt: The major monotheistic religions of the world--Judaism, Christianity and Islam--have certain elements in common, particularly in their scriptures concerning the beginnings of life and the early history of human beings. This shared beginning is compellingly worth further study. Common ground and common threads can only help a dialogue between people of different faiths. This reference work could be a tool toward greater understanding of other faiths and focuses on the story of the creation of the universe and of humans. Part One traces the development of the earth and its inhabitants from a scientific viewpoint so that the humanistic perspective may be contrasted with the scriptural accounts to follow. Part Two features an introduction to the Tanakh, information on the Torah, and what is known about its authors, and other influences on the Jewish religion, followed by actual scriptures from the Torah from the creation through the destruction of the Tower of Babel. Then a section each is devoted to an explanation of the Catholic, Protestant and Fundamentalist Christian interpretations of these stories, citing scripture as appropriate. Part Three affords a Muslim perspective with excerpts from the Sirah that refer to events and characters from the early chapters of Genesis. The appendices are rich--various chronologies of similar events based on the different scriptures, tables of contents for the various holy books, tables presenting summaries of a particular perspective on a subject or comparisons between two perspectives and much more.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the present book is to expound the theological and ethical affirmations of these co-pioneers. It has been written in the conviction that the Old Testament prophets' understanding of man's existence in community under God is as lively a possibility for us today as it was for Israel in the eighth century B.C. Many of the forms of our institutional and material environment have changed, but the basic alternatives open to us for understanding and accepting our place in the universe have not. To this extent Amos and Isaiah are our contemporaries. - Preface.
