Andy Hall, a journalist and son of the park superintendent at the time, was living in the park when the tragedy occurred and spent years tracking down rescuers, survivors, lost documents, and recordings of radio communications. In Denali’s Howl, Hall reveals the full story of the expedition in a powerful retelling that will mesmerize the climbing community as well as anyone interested in mega-storms and man’s sometimes deadly drive to challenge the forces of nature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of "Celestial Sleuth" (2014), yet more mysteries in art, history, and literature are solved by calculating phases of the Moon, determining the positions of the planets and stars, and identifying celestial objects in paintings. In addition to helping to crack difficult cases, these studies spark our imagination and provide a better understanding of the skies. Weather archives, vintage maps, tides, historical letters and diaries, military records and the assistance of experts in related fields help with this work. For each historical event influenced by astronomy, there is a different kind of mystery to be solved. How did the changing tides affect an army's battle plans? How did the phases of the moon affect how an artist painted a landscape? Follow these exciting investigations with a master “celestial sleuth” as he tracks down the truth and helps unravel mysteries as far back as the Middle Ages and as recent as the iconic 1945 photograph of a kiss in Times Square on VJ Day. Topics or "cases" pursued were chosen for their wide public recognition and intrigue and involve artists such as Vincent van Gogh and Claude Monet; historical events such as the campaigns of Braveheart in Scotland and battles in World War II and the Korean War; and literary authors such as Chaucer, Cervantes, Shakespeare, Byron, and Edgar Allan Poe.

Book excerpt: In 1998, scientist, healer, and mystic Jude Currivan heard an inner message—a call to undertake a global quest that would transform her life and take her and her fellow travelers on an inner and outer odyssey that would ultimately reveal our hidden heritage and cosmic destiny. The initial intention of these journeys was to activate the healing energies of 12 ancient Lemurian artifacts around the earth to support the collective shift of awareness prophesied for 2012. But an even deeper purpose began to unfold. . . .The native elders of indigenous traditions around the world say that in these momentous times, "We are the ones we have been waiting for." As did the heroes of mythology, we are now about to embark on a spiritual quest to remember the wholeness of who we really are. The 12 activations and the opening of a galactic portal were completed during the December solstice of 2003, but in 2006 a further call heralded a 13th healing journey. As we approach 2012 and experience the birth pangs of a new age, this book shares an inspirational message of hope and reconciliation. It offers an empowering call for every one of us to embody our own divinity and fulfill our highest purpose as the heroes of this transformation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 The Alaska Range is a cordillera that arcs across Alaska, dividing the coastal lowlands around Cook Inlet from the Yukon lowlands of interior Alaska. The range is about 60 miles wide near Denali and home to twenty peaks taller than 10,000 feet. #2 When prospector Frank Densmore visited Lake Minchumina in 1889, the big mountain rising to the south so enthralled him that he couldn’t stop talking about it. For the next twenty years, virtually all travel to the region was for exploration and mountaineering. #3 The north face of Denali is named the Wickersham Wall, a 3-mile-wide precipice that sweeps skyward for 14,000 feet from the Peters Glacier to the summit of the north peak. It was named for Wickersham, who never made the summit, but ended his quest at an elevation of about 8,000 feet on the wall. #4 In 1912, four Kantishna miners, incensed at Cook’s deception and fueled by a barroom bet, set out for the summit. The Sourdough Expedition spent three months approaching the mountain by dogsled and ascending via the Muldrow Glacier. They reached the top and spent two and a half hours on the north summit taking in the view and planting a fourteen-foot spruce pole in a location they thought could be seen in Fairbanks, 150 miles away.

Book excerpt: In 1924, George Mallory and Sandy Irvine disappeared into the clouds encircling the peak of Everest. Whether they were the first men to reach the top of the Earth's highest mountain remains a mystery. They never returned from their ill-fated expedition. Seventy-five years later, the then-unknown mountaineer Conrad Anker made an extraordinary discovery. He spotted 'a patch of white' standing out against the rock; it was Mallory's frozen body. Mallory's treacherous route on Everest's northern slopes remains one of the most demanding challenges in mountaineering. So, is it possible that Mallory and Irvine -- exhausted, confused and oxygen-starved -- could have made the ascent all those years ago without artificial aid? Last year, Anker returned to Everest to find out. His partner was Leo Houlding, a freakishly talented young British climber with an appetite for death-defying ascents but untested at extreme altitude. Houlding, the lightning-fast, wild child of climbing, stands poles apart from Anker, a soft-spoken altruist and environmentalist. Kitted out in replica clothing and with a film crew recording their every move, they set off to solve Everest's oldest mystery. What they found was a story which explores the very nature of modern adventure. Against a backdrop of conflicting personal goals, commercial pressures, and a thirst for answers, they pushed themselves to the limit. Haunted by the memory of Mallory and Irvine, they were all too conscious that here, in the most dangerous place on the planet, they risked their lives with every step.
