Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combining historical, historiographical, museological, and touristic analysis, this study investigates how late medieval and early modern women of the Low Countries expressed themselves through texts, art, architecture and material objects, how they were represented by contemporaries, and how they have been interpreted in modern academic and popular contexts. Broomhall and Spinks analyse late medieval and early modern women's opportunities to narrate their experiences and ideas, as well as the processes that have shaped their representation in the heritage and cultural tourism of the Netherlands and Belgium today. The authors study female-authored objects such as familial and political letters, dolls' houses, account books; visual sources, funeral monuments, and buildings commissioned by female patrons; and further artworks as well as heritage sites, streetscapes, souvenirs and clothing with gendered historical resonances. Employing an innovative range of materials from written sources to artworks, material objects, heritage sites and urban precincts, the authors argue that interpretations of late medieval and early modern women's experiences by historians and art scholars interact with presentations by cultural and heritage tourism providers in significant ways that deserve closer interrogation by feminist researchers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Portraits in Early Modern English Drama studies the complex web of interconnections that grows out of the presentation of portraits as props in early modern English drama. Emanuel Stelzer considers this theory from the Elizabethan age up to the closing of the theatres. This book examines how the dramatic text and the subjectivities of the dramatis personae are shaped and changed through the process of observation and interpretation of pictures in the dramatic actions and dialogues. Unlike any previous study, it confronts when a portrait is clearly meant not to be a miniature. This also has bearings on the effect of the picture on the audience and in terms of genre expectation. Two important questions are interrogated in the book: What were the price and value of these portraits? and What were the strategies deployed by the playing companies to show women’s portraits in a theatre without actresses? This book will be of interest to different areas of research dealing with the history of drama and literature, material and visual culture studies, art history, gender studies, and performance studies.

Book excerpt: Ed Moses (b. 1928) is widely considered to be one of the central figures in the rich and complex history of postwar West Coast art. Like Richard Diebenkorn and Sam Francis, his work has been greatly influenced by the brilliant light of Southern California. Modernism and European and American abstract art are also echoed in Moses's work, and the vitality of his diverse oeuvre radiates throughout this first major retrospective of his paintings and drawings. Although he attended art school, Ed Moses is an autodidact who has labored to overcome his inability, as he put it, "to draw three dimensionally." And drawing has been central to his work, the spine from which all of his art extends. From his egg tempera paintings in the early 1950s to the "ror shock" paintings and drawings of the early 1990s, he has found ways to investigate the relationship between spontaneity (the legacy of abstract expressionism) and control and balance (inherited from Mondrian and the Russian constructivists). Moving decisively from abstraction to figuration, and from monochrome to tonality and color, Moses, like de Kooning and Pollock, has consistently turned away from the predictable and has sought new ground. In his bold exploration of forms and methods, Ed Moses has avoided the label of a particular tradition and, instead, continues to reinvent himself. With over seventy paintings and drawings that span his career, this is the most comprehensive book on Ed Moses available today. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In discourse, verbal messages are framed: speakers offer cues on the basis of which hearers are able to anchor the verbal message to the context. Furthermore, speakers cannot contribute to the discourse without at the same time showing their view on the subject matter of the discourse: the content of a discourse is necessarily ‘displayed’ from a certain perspective. Both the framing and perspectivising of verbal messages are not static, but subject to possible changes during the development of the discourse. Both concepts function at the intersection of a psychological-cognitive and a social-functional approach to discourse. In this volume, eight contributions are brought together which offer theoretical tools for describing and explaining framing and perspectivising devices in the production and comprehension of discourse, and apply them to the analysis of several types of discourse such as political satire, letters-to-the-editor, everyday narrations and newspaper reports.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a young adult, Brother Placidus Henry had several experiences that he interpreted as invitations to get close to God. But like the prodigal son, he developed a taste for the world, ignored the quiet calls of the Spirit, and became lost. Eventually he became a counselor, a profession that allowed him to work with lost people and find both himself and poetry. Just Beyond Your Fingers presents a collection of his religious poetry highlighting the moments in life when we search for and meet the universal Spirit. Though Christian in orientation, it is open to all religious traditions and to all people who walk in peace. Humanity is facing a chaotic period of radical change, cultural clashes, and religious confusion and conflict. These verses suggest moments of deep peace and clarity within a time of chaos and confusion, especially for modern pilgrims. This collection of poetry explores the search for the Spirit through the human life cycle, reflecting an aesthetic of emotion, clarity, and spontaneity.

Book excerpt: This book illuminates the interconnections between politics and religion through the lens of artistic production, exploring how art inspired by religion functioned as a form of resistance, directed against both Romanian national communism (1960-1989) and, latterly, consumerist society and its global market. It investigates the critical, tactical and subversive employments of religious motifs and themes in contemporary art pieces that confront the religious ‘affair’ in post-communist Romania. In doing so, it addresses a key gap in previous scholarship, which has paid little attention to the relationship between religious art and political resistance in communist Central and South-East Europe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a thrilling interconnected narrative, You’re in the Wrong Place presents characters reaching for transcendence from a place they cannot escape. Charles Baxter stated that "Joseph Harris has a particular feeling for the Detroit suburbs and the slightly stunted lives of the young people there. . . . You’re in the Wrong Place isn’t uniformly downbeat—there are all sorts of rays of hope that gleam toward the end." The book, composed of twelve stories, begins in the fall of 2008 with the shuttering of Dynamic Fabricating—a fictional industrial shop located in the Detroit suburb of Ferndale. Over the next seven years, the shop’s former employees—as well as their friends and families—struggle to find money, purpose, and levity in a landscape suddenly devoid of work, faith, and love. In "Would You Rather," a young couple brought together by Dynamic Fabricating shares a blissful weekend in Northern Michigan, unaware of the catastrophe that awaits them upon their return home. In "Acolytes," a devout Catholic clings to her faith as her brothers descend into cultish soccer violence. In "Memorial," an ex-Dynamic worker scrapes money together for a tribute to his best friend, lost to the war in Afghanistan. In "Was It Good for You?" a cam girl deconstructs materialism with her aging great aunt, a luxury sales associate, and an anxious, faceless client. And in the title story, simmering tensions come to a boil on a hot summer day for a hardscrabble landscaping crew, hired by the local bank to maintain the lawns of foreclosures. In turns elegiac and harrowing, You’re in the Wrong Place blends lyric intensity with philosophical eroticism to create a singular, powerful vision of contemporary American life. Readers of contemporary fiction grounded in place need to take up this collection.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From biblical times to the onset of the Black Death in the fourteenth century, leprosy was considered the worst human affliction, both medically and socially. Only fifty years ago, leprosy, or Hansen’s disease, was an incurable infectious illness, and it still remains a grave global concern. Recently, leprosy has generated attention in scholarly fields from medical science to the visual arts. This interdisciplinary art-historical survey on lepra and its visualization in sculpture, murals, stained glass, and other media provides new information on the history of art, medicine, religion, and European society. Christine M. Boeckl maintains that the various terrifying aspects of the disease dominated the visual narratives of historic and legendary figures stricken with leprosy. For rulers, beggars, saints, and sinners, the metaphor of leprosy becomes the background against which their captivating stories are projected.

Though the United States was often thought to be the haven of choice for these exiles, the greatest concentration of artists and critics first relocated to the nearby democratic capitals of Paris, Prague, and London. Through press and archival research, Modern German Art for Thirties Paris, Prague, and London examines the public activities of the four exile artists' groups and demonstrates the obstacles and competition each met trying to educate local and international audiences about recent German art. The story situates the artistic and critical endeavors of the exiles amid the turbulent international political events that led to World War II."
