Bridget Jones's Diary is the devastatingly self-aware, laugh-out-loud account of a year in the life of a thirty-something Singleton on a permanent doomed quest for self-improvement. Caught between the joys of Singleton fun, and the fear of dying alone and being found three weeks later half eaten by an Alsatian; tortured by Smug Married friends asking, "How's your love life?" with lascivious, yet patronizing leers, Bridget resolves to: reduce the circumference of each thigh by 1.5 inches, visit the gym three times a week not just to buy a sandwich, form a functional relationship with a responsible adult and learn to program the VCR. With a blend of flighty charm, existential gloom, and endearing self-deprecation, Bridget Jones's Diary has touched a raw nerve with millions of readers the world round. Read it and laugh—before you cry, "Bridget Jones is me!"

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2016 in the subject Musicology - Popular music, grade: 1,3, University of Bonn (Institut für Anglistik, Amerikanistik und Keltologie), course: The 19th-Century novel and its Impact on Popular Culture, language: English, abstract: Bridget Jones’s Diary is a popular adaption and both, novel and movie, have a strong noticeable atmosphere. But does this atmosphere differ or does the soundtrack support the atmosphere of the novel completely? To find an answer to these questions I will first prove the effect of music. Therefore, I will take a scene out of the movie and alter the music to create a different atmosphere and following, a different meaning. Next, I am going to analyse the introduction of the movie in respect of music. I will divide the beginning of the movie into two diverse parts. In the first one the music is played as background music and only subconsciously audible. In the second part it leads the action completely. Finally, an analysis of the beginning of the novel will be made. Here I am going to analyse the atmosphere chronologically and afterwards thematic with the help of an article by the famous writer Esther Newton.

Abstract: Caroline Wong MA in Applied Linguistics Keeping an 'I' out: A Discourse Analysis of Bridget Jones's Diary Abstract Selling six million copies, translated into 25 languages and published in 33 countries spawning two movies and two sequels (10meters.com, para. 4), Bridget Jones's Diary has been a phenomenal publishing success. Marking a divergence from traditional romances which pit a beautiful, courageous young heroine in the arms of an initially, cold and distant handsome hero, Fielding offered a heroine who was flawed in the traditional sense, being neither stunningly beautiful, nor young, but winning hearts because of her very imperfections. The content and style of this book was to ignite the beginnings of a new generation of writing that appealed directly to young women. Called 'chick-lit' these novels broke from the rigidity of traditional romance formulas, removing the more fairy-tale element. Heroines were cast in the ordinary environments of the workplace and life in the city, and the novels focused on work, female relationships, and the ups and downs of their relationship with men. Bridget Jones's Diary has been chosen for analysis because it is a novel written by a woman almost exclusively for a female audience and because the impact on its readership, and indeed the publishing world in terms of women's writing, has been enormous. This is the book that has inspired two sequels, two major films and given words like "fuckwittage" and "singleton" a place in the English language. Taking ideas from critics who have written on gender and discourse such as Robin Lakoff, Judith Butler and Mary Crawford, the language of the novel is examined to analyse 1how concepts of gender interplay through the discourse of the novel. The characters pick and choose their language depending on how they wish to express themselves and the image of femininity that they wish to articulate, but they are bound by societal expectations. This dissertation shows the restrictions to the characters' expression of the self in the novel and also the methods which the characters deploy in order to get around these boundaries. st Submitted 31 August, 2006 2 DOI: 10.5353/th_b3672304

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of international research provides a wide-ranging account of Jane Austen's reception across the length and breadth of Europe, from Russia and Finland in the North to Italy and Spain in the South. In historical terms, the survey ranges from the near-contemporary - since Austen's novels were available in French very soon after their original publication - to modern times, in those countries which for various reasons, linguistic, historical or ideological, have taken up the novels only in recent years. For many, Austen's novels are valued for their romantic content, as love stories, but increasingly they are being perceived as sophisticated, ironic narratives. In this, the quality of translation has been a significant factor and the many film and television adaptations have played an important part in establishing Austen's reputation amongst the public at large. It will be seen from this that across Europe Austen's 'reception history' is far from uniform and has been shaped by a complex of extra-literary forces.

This book was released on 2007-01-30 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning in the early 1980s, readers' advisory services were a widely discussed topic in North American public libraries. By 2005, almost every public library in the United States and Canada offered some form of readers' advisory service. The services offered have changed significantly, in ways perhaps disadvantageous to adult North American library patrons. This book provides a critical history of readers' advisory philosophy and offers a new perspective on the evolution of the service. The book analyzes the debate that shaped readers' advisory and discusses how the service has assumed its present form. The study follows readers' advisory through its three prominent stages of development, beginning with the period 1870 to 1916, when the service was still a subject of much crucial debate about its meaning and purpose. During the second phase (1917 to 1962), readers' advisory systematically committed itself to meaningful adult education through serious and purposeful reading. The book argues, however, that during the most recent phase of readers' advisory, from 1963 until the present, contemporary public libraries have turned their backs on the rich heritage of readers' advisory services by valorizing the reading of entertainment-oriented and commodified genre titles and bestsellers. Historical analysis, case studies and statistical charts augment the book's central argument.

Chick Lit is examined in relation to its linguistic peculiarities and their role as far as narrative, sociological and feminist issues are concerned, amongst others. Montoro's stylistics includes a cognitive slant that highlights futher readerly aspects of the texts. The approach illuminates how the genre works, and how it is set apart from others. In this respect, the stylistics of chick lit is understood in its contect of production and reception. Montoro evaluates reading processes and investigates readers' responsive attitude to the genre. This interdisciplinary work explores the boundaries of the stylistics of chick lit and works reflectively, looking at how exploring this genre can help the twofold aim of testing existing models of linguistic and cognitive analysis. It will be essential reading for those interested in cutting-edge stylistics.
