Book excerpt: C.G. Jung held an ‘extemporaneous’ seminar on “The Solar Myths and Opicinus de Canistris” at the 1943 Eranos Conference. In a complete version for the first time, this book presents all of the known material relating to the seminar, including notes taken by two of his students, Alwine von Keller and Rivkah Schärf Kluger, and the outline that Jung himself prepared. Opicinus de Canistris (1296–c. 1352) was a priest and cartographer from near Pavia, Italy. His typically medieval cartography is characterized by historical, theological, symbolic and astrological references along with a curious anthropomorphism, which depicted continents and oceans with human features. Jung recognized this as a projection of Opicinus’ inner world and interpreted the maps of the world as mandalas, where the integration of the shadow, the dark principle, was missing. From the contents: Opicinus de Canistris. Concluding Seminar, Eranos, Ascona, 1943 (Speaking Notes by Carl Gustav Jung) Notes on Jung’s Seminar held on August 12 and 14, 1943, by Alwine von Keller and Rivkah Schärf Kluger Rivkah Schärf Kluger. Book excerpt: Supervision in analytical psychology is a topic that until recently has been largely neglected. Vision and Supervision draws on archetypal, classical, and developmental Post-Jungian theory to explore supervision from a variety of different avenues. Supervision is a critical issue for therapists in many training programmes. Quality of training and of therapeutic treatment is paramount, and increasingly the therapy profession is having to devise ways of assessing and monitoring themselves and each other. In this book, Dale Mathers and his contributors emphasise a model of supervision based on parallel process, symbol formation and classical Jungian analysis rather than developmental psychology or psychoanalytic theory, to show how respect for diversity can innovate the practice of supervision. Divided into three sections, this book covers: the framework of supervision, its boundaries and ethical parameters individuation supervision in different contexts including working with organisations and multicultural perspectives. Written by experienced clinicians, Vision and Supervision brings insights from analytical psychology to the supervisory task and encourages the supervisor to pay as much attention to what does not happen in a session as to what does. It offers a fresh perspective for analysts and psychotherapists alike, as well as other mental health professionals involved in the supervisory process.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing up, we typically spend more time with our brothers and sisters than we do with our parents. In an age of divorce, mobility, and alienation, the sibling bond is often the only one that really lasts. Given that brothers and sisters are such a fundamental aspect of human existence, it is remarkable that they have received so little in-depth attention in the field of psychology. Henry Abramovitch’s Brothers and Sisters explores the tension between the myth and reality of brothers and sisters in a variety of cultures and through the poignant brother-sister stories in the Bible. Abramovitch looks at the developmental sequence in the sibling relationship as brothers or sisters struggle to find their place with each other, concluding with a very personal account of his own relationship with his brother and sister.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ancient gods and goddesses, heroes and heroines, and fabulous creatures are alive and well within our unconscious. Sigmund Freud speaks of "endopsychic myths" and "psycho-mythology"; C.G. Jung, of the "mythopoeic imagination" and the "mythforming structural elements" of the psyche. James Hillman contends that "the essence of the psyche is myth." Michael Vannoy Adams provides persuasive examples of how myths appear in our dreams and fantasies and does so with erudition, wit, and eloquent clarity. Adam's authoritative study, now appearing in a second, expanded edition, has won high praise from fellow analysts. Ginette Paris called The Mythological Unconscious "a treasure trove of the imagination," and Beverly Zabriskie cited its "balance of charm and scholarship, humor and gravitas, which simultaneously amuses and enlightens."
